Adult patients now make up roughly 1 in 4 orthodontic patients in the United States, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. That share has grown steadily over the past two decades.
The clinical reality is straightforward: orthodontic treatment works at any age when the supporting bone and gum tissue are healthy.
The most common triggers:
Adult bone is more dense and less metabolically active than adolescent bone. Teeth move more slowly in adults. Treatment timelines are often 20 to 30% longer than for comparable cases in teenagers, though this depends on case complexity and individual biology.
Adults with active periodontal (gum) disease cannot begin orthodontic treatment until the infection is stable. Moving teeth through inflamed bone and tissue accelerates bone loss rather than correcting alignment. The standard clinical approach is to stabilize any active periodontal disease fully before beginning orthodontic treatment.
In adults, growth is complete. This means jaw discrepancies caused by the jaw bones themselves cannot be corrected with orthodontics alone in adult patients. Cases in this category are candidates for orthognathic (jaw) surgery, planned collaboratively between an orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. These are not common -- most adult cases involve the teeth and soft tissue, not the skeletal relationship.
Adults often have crowns, bridges, veneers, or implants that complicate treatment planning. Crowns and veneers may not bond to brackets the same way natural enamel does. Implants do not move. Invisalign is the most common choice among adult patients. Aligners are removable, clear, and do not interfere with professional appearance. Ceramic (clear) braces use tooth-colored ceramic brackets on fixed appliances. Mechanically identical to traditional braces. No compliance requirement.
Traditional metal braces remain the most cost-effective fixed option and the most precise for complex cases.
Lingual braces are placed on the back (lingual) surfaces of the teeth and are completely invisible from the front. A specialty option; ask at your consultation whether this is available and appropriate.
Most adult cases complete in 12 to 24 months. Simple cosmetic corrections may resolve in 6 to 9 months. Complex cases involving bite correction take longer.
The estimate at your consultation is based on the number of aligner trays or archwire stages your case requires -- not a guess. You will receive a specific projected timeline after your records appointment.

Most plans with an orthodontic benefit cover adults to the same lifetime maximum as teens. The exception: some employer-sponsored plans cap the benefit at age 18 or 19. Call your carrier and ask specifically before assuming you have no adult coverage.
Treatment ends. The retention commitment does not.
Teeth that have been moved orthodontically will shift back toward their original positions if not held in place. This is biology, not a failure of treatment. The periodontal ligament fibers that hold teeth in their sockets have memory and pull toward where the tooth came from.
Retainers prevent this. The protocol at Valley Ranch Orthodontics is nightly retainer wear indefinitely after treatment. Full-time wear is required for the first 3 to 6 months after treatment. After that, nightly wear is sufficient for most patients. If you lose or break a retainer, replace it immediately.

Adults of any age are welcome. There is no upper age limit on orthodontic treatment for patients in good periodontal health.
